 Sleep is one of the very essential functions of human survival as it helps the body and mind to recharge while you rest leaving a feeling of refreshed when you wake up. It is a complex biological process where the body and brain repair, restore, and reenergize for optimal functioning.

 While sleeping it’s only us who are unconscious, but our body and brain still perform many important functions to keep our body healthy and active. So when we don’t get enough sleep it affects our physical as well as mental health leaving us restless, tired, fatigued which affects our normal way of thinking and functioning

How many hours of sleep is essential for us to function at our best?

National Sleep Foundation recommends the hours of sleep requirement based on age groups is as follows

Toddler 1-2 years 11-14 hours
Pre-schooler 3-5 years 10-13 hours

Young adult 18-25 years 7-9 hours
Adult 26-64 years 7-9 hours
Older Adults 65 years and above 7-8 hours

 Now talking about sleep disorders these are the conditions that disturb an individual from having normal sleep patterns, there are around 80 types of sleep disorders or even more. Some of the most common sleep disorders are Insomnia, Sleep apnea, Restless leg syndrome (RLS), Hypersomnia, Parasomnia, and Circadian rhythm disorder. Studies and surveys reported that 93% of the Indian population has sleep disorders/deprivation. 34% population has sleep apnea which is the leading cause of obesity and cardiovascular diseases future.

 The amount of sleep you need depends on several factors, including your age, lifestyle, health, and whether you have been getting enough sleep recently. People who feel tired during the day have a true sleep disorder while others spend less or do not get enough time to sleep.

What are the signs and symptoms that we observe in sleep disorders?

Unable to fall asleep and stay asleep

Breathing difficulty or breathing disorder in which an individual stops breathing for about 10 sec or more during sleep

Prickly or tingling sensation in legs with a strong urge to move them which is a result of insufficient sleep

Unable to stay awake in the daytime, extreme sleepiness, fatigue, and tiredness

Poor sleep-wake cycles

Acting unusually while falling asleep, sleeping, or waking from sleep like talking, walking, or sometimes eating
